» MADHAVPUR BEACH
Sleepy Cavelossim, straddling the coast road 11-km south of Colva, is the last
major settlement in southwest Salcete: its only claim to fame. A short way beyond
the village's picturesque church square, a narrow lane veers left across an
open expanse of paddy fields to the Cavelossim-Assolna ferry crossing near the
mouth of the Sal River.
Endowed with beautiful sandy beaches lined with coconut trees the town finds
mention in scriptures as that of great antiquity, for it is believed that Krishna
had married Rukmini at this place, the legend is kept alive by the Mer community
by holding a fair on Chaitra Sud 12 every year. The Haveli temple of Madhavraiji
is the chief attraction.
There is also a Bethak of Mahaprabhuji as Shri Vallabhacharya had given discourse
on Shrimad Bhagwat for seven days over here.

» GOPNATH
BEACH
Once a beloved summer home of Maharaja Krishna Kumar Singhji of Bhavnagar, 75-kms
from Bhavnagar, Gopnath still endures a favourite beach site of Gujarat because
of its breathtakingly beautiful sea coast with it's spectacular limestone cliffs
and great views, sea breezes and colourful birdlife, must have made an excellent
break from the city during the summer months.
The Gopnath beach has lovely, firm, sands for walking and shallow shore waters
for wading, but the high tidal difference of the coast, makes the water murky
and not very inviting for a long swim. Gopnath is the base for some spectacular
sightseeing.
A beautiful hamlet on the coast of the Gulf of Khambhat and at a distance of
10 kms from Talaja, the 'taluka' headquarter of Bhavnagar district is Gopnath.
Vying for eminence on the tourist circuit with development of a heritage hotel-
Gopnath Bungalow, it was a pleasant seashore retreat of Gohil rulers of Bhavnagar.

» SOMNATH & VERAVAL
BEACH
Crouched in the shadow of a Portuguese fort on the opposite, northern side of
the headland from Vagator, Chapora, 10-km from Mapusa, is a lat busier than
most north coast villages. Dependent on fishing and boat building, it has, to
a great extent, retained a life of its own independent of tourism. The workaday
indifference to the annual invasion of Westerners is most evident on the main
street, lined with as many regular stores as travellers cafes and restaurants.
The beach of Somnath is unshaded but lovely, the views stupendous, and one can
enjoy cool, fresh coconuts, camel rides, and spray of the waves as one wade
along the shore. The most spectacular sight of Veraval is the fishing port,
where thousands of trawlers, country crafts and dhows can be seen unloading
their catch. Dhows are built in this region by master artisans who use simple
tools to turn piles of rafters and timber into perfectly proportioned, symmetrical
sea going vessels (the most modern instrument used is a measuring tape).
The Somnath temple is beautiful and quiet impressive. The aura of devotion is
more awesome, but the high point is its location by the blue waters of the Arabian
Sea.
Just 6 kms from Somnath, Veraval was a fortified port town of the royal family
of Junagadh. The old walls have been pulled down but the impressive Junagadh
Gate and Patan Gate, both with intricate carvings, can still be seen, as can
the old Nawabi Palace with Gothic features facing the sea. The beach near the
palace, has benches and a jogging path, and is a popular place for strolls and
swimming in the morning.

Chorwad, a great place to enjoy views of rocky shores, boat riding and also

and 23 kms from the fishing centre of Veraval. It is a holiday resort with an
