South India Places of Interest
» COORG

Home
to the Habanero (the world's second hottest chili), the Southern Birdwing (India's
largest butterfly), the Atlas Moth (with the world's largest wingspan), over
100 species of birds and the best blues collection in the country, Mojo is a
treasure trove of natural wonders. Perched at 1100m at the top of the rain-slope,
the organic farm is spread over 25 acres of undulating terrain.
The retreat was set up in 1999 by Dr Anurag (Doc) and Sujata Goel to nurture
Coorg's fragile ecosystem and to promote their environmental NGO, WAPRED Research
Foundation. At Mojo, coffee, cardamom, pepper and vanilla are grown organically
under the shade of rainforest trees. Solar panels are used to generate electricity.
Locally grown organic produce is used for the delectable farm-fresh cuisine.
Even the accommodation has been designed to give you an intimate brush with
nature. While the Yin-Yang Plantation Cottage is deep inside the rainforest,
the Brook-side Deluxe Cottage is set against a thicket of bamboo, banana,
orange and pineapple.
Whether it's the hand-pollination of vanilla or learning about the lifecycle
of coffee, Mojo offers a first-hand learning experience about life at a farm.
Activities include a detailed excursion of the plantation, a nature walk to
Galibeedu Ridge, trip to the Dubare Elephant Training Camp and a drive to the
Cauvery for swimming or mahseer fishing. Though every season unfolds some hidden
facet of Mojo, the best time to visit is from beginning October to end of May.
This region gets some of the highest rainfall in the world so avoid the months
July-August, unless you are doing a thesis on leeches.

» HAMPI-HOSPET

Hampi,
the land of surprises was founded in the middle of 14th Century by two local
princes, Hakka & Bukka. The Vijayanagar Empire came to be celebrated for
its might and wealth and as a show piece of imperial magnificence. Vijayanagara
is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it... " So
eulogized Abdul Razaq, a Muslim envoy who visited Hampi.
The city was sacked pillaged and burnt in 1565 AD, after the combined attack
of armies of Muslim Sultanates of the Deccan defeated the Vijayanagar Military
Commander and the King fled the Capital. Rocky hills and the mighty Tungabhadra
River, which flows through this rugged landscape, dominate the terrain. One
can still glimpse the splendour of Vijayanagara - one of the largest empires
in the history of India - in its ruins. The Vijayanagar Kings were great patrons
of Art & Architecture as evident by the vast ruins of Hampi. In an effort
to resurrect this abandoned capital, the government has been involved in the
restoration, excavation and protection of the ruins, which are spread over
an area of 26 sq kms.

340 kms from Bangalore lies Hospet. Its tourist importance lies in its proximity
to Hampi, the site of the medieval Vijayanagar Empire, situated about 13 kms
away. The Tungabhadra Dam here harnesses the sweet waters of the Tungabhadra
river. At the base of the dam is a garden styled along Japanese lines.

» HYDERABAD

Hyderabad,
the fifth largest metropolis of India, is the state capital of Andhra Pradesh,
known for its rich history and culture with monuments, mosques, temples, a rich
and varied heritage in arts, crafts and dance.
This site endeavours to present the rich heritage and culture of Hyderabad,
along with an insight into Hyderabad today.
Once upon a time pearl traders used to spread out their beads by the side
of the road and hawk them the way you'd find green vegetables peddled today.
The city has gotten a lot more tech-savvy since then, but it still retains
quite a bit of the charm of the Shahi and the Nawabi days. While you find
a younger crowd that is at once cosmo and geeky, you also find a lot of the
old world aura about it.
Visit the twin cities with fullHYD. We take you through all the old and the
newer neighbourhoods, we present the best attractions, and we preview them
through our virtual tours. If you are touring, we suggest exhaustive itineraries
for your visit, starting right from the time you land, and we tell you everything
from what to eat and where to eat it to where to shop, how to travel and where
to stay. And then we suggest that you explore more of this site. At the end
of it, you'll know more about this city than most Hyderabadis themselves do.
And we're sure you'll love it.

» KADAVU
Dive Kadavu - Kadavu's premier resort, is located only 10 minutes by boat from
Kadavu airport and is set in lush topical gardens adjoining a beautiful sandy
beach called Matana, which in Kadavu dialect means all tide sandy beach. On
one side of the resort are the villages of Navautu and Drue and behind are rolling
hills with walking trails, which have great views. As the resort faces due west
the sunsets can be quite spectacular - great for photographers.
Kadavu Island is located approx 100kls (60mls) south of Suva, the capital of
Fiji. It is the fourth largest of the 300 odd islands in Fiji and is virtually
undeveloped. The island is surrounded by coral reefs with magnificent palm fringed
beaches and rugged terrain. At the southwestern end lies Nabukulevu, an extinct
volcano. The length is approx 80kls (50 miles) and the width varies. The native
population of some 12,000 still live quite traditionally in 72 villages scattered
throughout the island. As there are few roads, transport is mainly by boat.
Vunisea, the only town on the island, is located near the airport and boasts
of a post office, hospital, police station and boarding school.
